After a month of bad fatigue, and cancelling pretty much everything out of necessity before being told to continue cancelling everything out of precaution, I’ve been feeling burnt out. Then this showed up at my door yesterday to brighten up life, care of a far-away but very close friend. I lost 110 hours to illness in February. That's nearly 25% of an average adult's waking hours. In January I 'only' lost 89 hours. The past month has definitely been harder. I cancelled a lot of plans, including dinner with friends who are permanently moving overseas. I felt frustrated. I didn't miss a single hour of work for my job, however, and I'm proud of that. At the start of the year, I said that I thought I was ready to keep track of how much time I'm losing because the numbers wouldn't be so depressing/horrifying; this is worse than I thought. I lost 89 hours to illness this month. That's 89 hours when I should have been awake and productive, working towards my professional goals or enjoying my mid-thirties, but was instead too unwell to function. I think my social media gives the impression that I’m pretty much fine these days, because illness isn't something that's easily photographed or fun to share. And even here, this photo looks like a peaceful nap. It doesn't show the achy, flu-like symptoms, the cognitive struggle, the hours leading up to this moment that I’m still calling ‘productive’ even though I was struggling to hold myself upright, to think straight. If I have missed your get-together or your book launch this month, if I have made plans with you and then cancelled, if I've forgotten everything you told me last time we talked, I'm sorry. I'm trying to get back to normal, I am slowly getting better, but I'm not there yet. . . #chronicillness #chronicfatiguesyndrome #chronicfatigue #cfs
